Cargo First strengthens 'One Team' operation at Bournemouth Airport as e-commerce demand grows

Cargo First, Bournemouth Airport’s dedicated cargo handling service, has strengthened its fast-track ‘One Team’ operation by bringing its on-site customs bonded warehouse facilities fully in-house.

The move further streamlines Cargo First’s ground handling operation which is geared toward providing a faster alternative to the congested London airport system for freight customers.

It comes as global e-commerce demand continues to grow. IATA (International Air Transport Association) suggested in a recent industry briefing that global e-commerce parcel volumes could double to 260 billion by 2025, with 80% of sales estimated to be cross-border.

And FedEx Express recently published research saying e-commerce would continue to take a growing proportion of total consumer spending. But the number one customer complaint (53%) is that deliveries take too long, with an expectation of receiving goods within three days to one week of ordering.

Air France KLM Martinair Cargo flags off a sustainable alternative with goSAF

Air France KLM Martinair Cargo (AFKLMP Cargo) has taken a new step forward in making the airfreight industry more sustainable with the introduction of goSAF. As of today, customers can set the level of their contribution to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for every cargo shipment they book.

This is part of its pledge to tackle climate change, achieving net-zero CO2 emissions in 2050. AFKLMP Cargo believes that the best way to achieve a more sustainable future for the airfreight industry is by joining hands with customers.

With goSAF, customers using the myCargo booking portal can set the level of their contribution to SAF for each shipment. AFKLMP Cargo gives customers a choice of four contribution levels, which will allow them to proportionally reduce their contribution to CO2 emissions when booking. The underlying CO2 emissions calculator determines the expected CO2 emissions of the shipment and calculates the costs of compensating for this by investing in the purchase of SAF.

GertJan Roelands, senior vice president of Sales & Distribution, Air France KLM Martinair Cargo explains: “When our customers decide to contribute to SAF, they not only reduce the CO2 emissions of their own shipments but also contribute to more sustainable supply chains for their customers and help them and the broader cargo industry reduce the impact on the environment. By working together and gradually increasing the percentage of SAF used to power every flight, we can really make a difference in achieving a more sustainable airfreight industry.”

A Human Connection: People & Air Cargo

“People are the priceless soul of any successful enterprise.”

Steve Townes, CEO ACL Airshop and Founder Ranger Aerospace. He made the statement while ringing in the 25th anniversary of Ranger Aerospace in September this year.

Townes’ comment is particularly relevant in the current global backdrop.

At the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) World Cargo Symposium (WCS) 2022 held in London, last week Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo, outlined four priorities that the aviation sector had to confront head-on. “At this World Cargo Symposium, the question is what issues do we need to tackle together? And I would answer that with four priorities: achieving our net zero by 2050 commitment; continuing to modernise processes; finding better solutions to safely carry lithium batteries. and making air cargo attractive to new talent.”

Lufthansa Cargo’s Chief Commercial Officer Ashwin Bhat made similar comments on the importance of people in the air cargo sector while speaking to The STAT Trade Times along the sidelines of the air cargo India 2022 event held in Mumbai. Citing a popular saying from Africa, Bhat said, “There’s a saying in Africa if you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far go together.”

Over half of our Indian clients expect pharmaceuticals business to expand: IAG Cargo

IAG Cargo, the cargo division of International Airlines Group (IAG) hosted a roundtable at the JW Marriott Hotel in New Delhi to discuss key air cargo trends, business updates, and survey findings. Speakers included John Cheetham, Chief Commercial Officer at IAG Cargo, Yashpal Sharma, President of Air Cargo Forum India (ACFI) & Managing Director at Skyways Group, along with Pratul Shekhar, Senior Director Airfreight at DSV.

IAG Cargo recently conducted a global survey of freight forwarders and logistics industry professionals to learn about their perspectives on the sector’s future. This served as a debate point, emphasising developments in digitalisation and sustainability. According to the findings, the Indian market has significantly embraced online booking for air cargo, with 76% of respondents reporting it as their preferred booking method, compared to only 46% internationally. In contrast, the worldwide market (53%), continues to rely on email as their major channel for booking freight.

Sustainability appears to be more important to Indian freight forwarders and logistics experts than to their worldwide counterparts. 78% of those polled in India indicated their company has a sustainability plan (the worldwide response was 67%), and 68% said sustainability was “very essential,” compared to 38% of the global population. The panellists discussed how sustainability influences their business decisions and how the sector is advancing toward SAF goals.

How forwarders are looking at the future

Like all sectors of the air cargo industry, freight forwarders, too, were impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and the following repercussions. The ensuing supply chain crisis resulted in an increase in freight rates with implications for forwarders’ earnings, says Accenture in a report highlighting freight forwarders’ earnings amid carrier-rate volatility. Understanding the relationship between rates and earnings can help freight forwarders navigate the volatile forwarding market, says the report.

“The past two years of pandemic-related pressure sparked more changes in the freight forwarding industry than in the last 25 years combined,” says Brandon Fried, Executive Director, Airforwarders Association. “Locked-down consumers resorted to online ordering goods in response to government-mandated lockdowns creating more shipment demand than ever. This change in purchasing habits created unsurpassed demand for air freight services as retailers and manufacturers struggled to meet demand. Airfreight forwarders rose to the occasion by providing creative solutions to the most complex logistical challenges ever seen in the supply chain industry.”

Freight forwarders are asset-light intermediaries with flexible cost structures. “Between 62 and 85 percent of revenues are channelled into purchasing carrier capacity (such as cargo airlines),” says the McKinsey report. “Of the remainder, forwarders typically convert 20–30 percent to earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT), achieving EBIT margins of 1–11 percent with return on invested capital (ROIC) typically above 20 percent, given the asset-light business model.”
