The world as we know it is changing! The pandemic has challenged long-serving, traditional structures and work processes. Digitalisation is finally taking off within the air cargo industry, and the past two years have shown that resilience, courage, and embracing change yield the best results. These elements have led to the emergence of the Next Generation approach which induces a corporate mindset shift.

Thanks to its many dedicated employees across the world, Qatar Airways Cargo demonstrated agility, innovation, and flexibility in the face of this extraordinary period in which the air cargo industry, as a whole, experienced major upheaval. It is this positive disruption within a crisis that Qatar Airways Cargo intends to apply to all aspects of its business.

In line with this, Qatar Airways Cargo will be unveiling digital enhancements and new products in the course of this year. Lufthansa Cargo to expand intra-European route network with new A321 freighters

Lufthansa Cargo will begin offering more capacity in its medium-haul network on specially converted Airbus A321 freighters in October 2022. In March 2022, the first freight flight of its sort took launched from Frankfurt to Dublin. It has the same design as the first A321 freighter (D-AEUC, ‘Hello Europe’) and can carry 28 tonnes of cargo on 14 pallets and container slots on the main deck and 10 on the lower deck. Lufthansa Cargo can continue to expand its footprint in the fast-growing eCommerce industry by providing well-known quality service and products.

Similar to the first A321F, the second aircraft will also be based at the Frankfurt hub and operated by Lufthansa CityLine under the wet lease agreement. Both A321Fs will operate under Lufthansa Cargo flight numbers. As a Group company, Lufthansa CityLine has worked intensively in recent months on the technical and operational preparation of the first two converted aircraft of this type in Germany. The new destinations in the intra-European network include Birmingham (BHX), London (LHR) and Madrid (MAD). The existing destinations Istanbul (IST), Tel Aviv (TLV), Malta (MLA), Tunis (TUN), Dublin (DUB), Manchester (MAN) and Cairo (CAI) will continue to be served, while Istanbul and Tel Aviv will see additional frequencies.

In a first, Synhelion produces solar syngas on industrial scale

Synhelion has become the first company in the world to succeed in producing syngas on an industrial scale using only solar heat as an energy source.

The Swiss solar fuel pioneer successfully demonstrated this on the multi-focus solar tower of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Jülich, North Rhine- Westphalia. The firm stated that with this move, “the last decisive technical milestone for the industrial production of carbon-neutral jet fuels has thus been reached.”

Synhelion has developed a solar thermal process for the production of synthetic fuels that does not require electricity.

The unique technology uses high-temperature solar heat to produce syngas, which is then used in standard industrial processes to synthesise liquid fuels, such as kerosene, gasoline, or diesel, that are compatible with conventional jet engines and internal combustion engines. Such sun-to-liquid fuel closes the CO2 cycle, as it releases only as much CO2 during its combustion as was previously used for its production.
