Air Charter Service record almost 1500 cargo in August to October

Air Charter Service announces the quarter numbers and the result has recorded its busiest ever quarter for its cargo division, with 1,445 cargo charters in the period August to October, 2021. This, combined with its other divisions, resulted in the highest ever revenue for the company in one quarter – a total of £321.1 million (US$430 million).

Dan Morgan-Evans, Group Cargo Director at ACS, commented, “Over the past three months we have had the busiest period in our history. On average the cargo division had one charter departing every 90 minutes over the course of the month. Manufacturers and retailers who have historically relied on shipping to move the bulk of their orders are now considering charters as the only solution to hit impending deadlines and, in particular, Christmas. The bulk of air cargo is traditionally carried in the belly of scheduled passenger airliners, but that network will not be up to its full capacity for some time yet, and now is the time to turn to charter.

“We also had some large humanitarian projects in the period, flying in shelter kits from the UK government and aid from other nations to Haiti following the devastating earthquake in the country. We arranged transportation of several hundred tons of relief goods, including medical kits and food supplies to Afghanistan following the troubles in the country in July and August. Our group charter division also helped to evacuate almost 25,000 people out of the region in that same period.

Brussels Airport launches Stargate project for greener aviation

Brussels Airport officially launches Stargate project, which has received a grant within the European Green deal. In the next five years, Brussels Airport will be working with a consortium of 21 partners on some 30 concrete projects to make aviation and airports greener and more sustainable. Stargate includes building a biofuel blending installation at the airport, electric ground handling material and testing a new innovation that will make engine test runs much quieter.

At the end of 2020, following a call of the European Commission, Brussels Airport took the initiative to submit an ambitious programme (“Stargate”) together with 21 partners, including three European airports, airlines, mobility and knowledge institutes and local authorities, to develop innovations and initiatives for an accelerated transition to greener aviation. Brussels Airport’s Stargate project was selected and has received a 24.8 million euros grant within the European Green Deal to implement these projects in the coming years.

"With Stargate we want to show, together with our partners, that more sustainable aviation is possible, and that we want to take the lead in this. Through partnership and innovation, we want to address the climate challenges we are facing. Within the Stargate project, we will develop biofuels for aircraft on the airport's grounds, make the ground operations more sustainable, and turn airports into intermodal hubs, where alternatives for the car are even more accessible. By exchanging knowledge and experience with our partners, we can learn from each other, and our fellow airports will be the first to roll out the specific actions that proved successful at Brussels Airport. And within Stargate we are also looking at opportunities to cooperate with the local residents, for example regarding renewable energy. In addition,  the initiatives around the modal split will of course have a positive impact for them as well.”, says Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport.

Data-driven sales approach positions ECS as more than just a GSSA

Cédric Millet, Chief Strategy & Digital Officer of ECS Group, speaks to The STAT Trade Times about how digital technologies rolled out under “Cargo Digital Factory” are deployed to meet the changing needs of customers.

What are the strategic changes you are making to make ECS ever ready for the digital era and keep yourself ahead of the competition in the GSSA segment?
Covid accelerated the need for a digital transformation in the cargo industry, which has been lagging behind for decades compared to other sectors. Many cargo industry players are today in a reactive mode when it comes to adapting to the new reality, but ECS started its digital transformation in 2018, way before the pandemic. We had three objectives in mind: harmonize & simplify, digitize to automate and develop new service offerings for our airline customers.

We significantly invested in expert resources, both coming from the cargo activity of renowned airlines and from the technology fields. Thanks to these expert resources and taking as a benchmark the “best in class”, we anticipated the evolution of the airlines’ needs, and implemented new solutions accordingly. The increased commercial success of ECS Group compared to its competitors GSSAs is not a coincidence: it is of course linked to its commercial strength, but also to its business transformation which makes ECS able to offer today an extensive and unrivaled scope of new services.

Wiremind enhances its Skypallet ULD and flight optimisation system

SkyPallet introduces three services that are of particular interest and help to bridge the gap in knowledge and experience within an airline’s air cargo teams, resulting in greater process conformity, higher revenues and improved flight safety are given that applicable regulations and restrictions are automatically considered by the system.

Wiremind recently expanded its air cargo software and the data-science team has spent the past months enhancing the company’s trusted capacity steering platform. SkyPallet, which counts over 1200 users in 100 countries – among them leading, international air cargo stakeholders such as Emirates, Atlas Air, United, Qantas, ECS Group, and Chapman Freeborn – offers several service modules that can be used together or individually.

SkyPallet’s 3D Volume Calculator supports sales staff in pricing decisions for quotations, as it determines within seconds how much space a non-standard shipment would be occupying given available capacity options. To do so, it automatically considers contours and restrictions, thus eliminating several manual process steps that not only slow down the quotation process, but can also result in inaccurate and inconsistent data, and therefore reduced revenue potential. The 3D shipment visualisation can be shared with all involved parties, an appropriate rate can be established, and the airline benefits from an increase in revenues.

Air Canada adds 45 per cent extra cargo capacity into and out of Vancouver

Air Canada has increased cargo capacity into and out of Vancouver between November 21 and 30 from its hubs in Toronto, Montreal and Calgary as it works to ensure that the vital economic supply chain links in British Columbia are maintained following the impacts of last week's flooding.

In total, Air Canada is adding 586 tonnes of cargo capacity an increase of 45 per cent over originally planned levels, representing 3,223 cubic metres to support B.C.'s economic supply chain and the needs of its communities. The additional capacity is equivalent in weight to approximately 860 adult moose.

"The economic supply chain is vital, and to help support the urgent transport of goods into and out of British Columbia, we have increased capacity to our YVR hub by using the flexibility of Air Canada's fleet to reschedule 28 passenger flights from narrow-body aircraft to be operated with wide-body Boeing 787 Dreamliners, Boeing 777, and Airbus A330-300 aircraft. These changes will allow an additional 282 tonnes of goods to be moved across the country on our scheduled passenger flights," said Jason Berry, Vice President, Cargo, at Air Canada.

“Sales are part of our DNA, but clients are the air we breathe”

In the rapidly changing world of commerce and trade aided by modern, easy-to-use digital tools, general sales and service agents for cargo carriers are modernising their customer interaction to help them improve revenue and reduce cost. Some of the GSSAs are ahead of the others and one of them is ECS Group. Reji John talks to Adrien Thominet, Executive Chairman of ECS Group, and finds out what they do differently and how they want to set new benchmarks in the GSSA space.

You have been with ECS Group for 25 years and had moved up the leadership position remarkably well from COO in 2011 to CEO in 2017 and now executive chairman. What will change in your current leadership role? How do you intend to take ECS Group through one of the most challenging phases of the aviation industry?

Yes, I’m immensely proud to be at the head of the group that has shaped me. But ECS Group has always been more than the person in charge – it’s a truly collective effort. Like my predecessor, I will continue to rely on the group’s strengths and the wide range of skills it has. My appointment was planned, but it’s a coincidence that it comes at a time when the entire industry is changing. I’m extremely excited to be taking on this new responsibility at such a crucial moment for the group. I’m determined to cement our group’s commercial strength and to highlight even more clearly the added value it offers in terms of the support we give to our clients. While sales are part of our DNA, our clients are the air we breathe. That’s why I’m extremely proud to be able to launch our new concept – the Augmented GSA. ECS Group’s service offering is now built around our driving forces, with four fundamental pillars: New Abilities, Technology, Commercial, and Sustainability. The New Abilities pillar contains 10 individual modules, such as the established Total Cargo Management (TCM) solution, which covers all operational requirements, a data-scanning service, and a quality and safety management component, for example. With the Technology pillar, ECS Group enables process efficiencies across the transportation chain through specially developed in-house digital solutions, while the Commercial pillar makes use of these technologies to provide solid business figures and ultimately greater financial success. The Sustainability pillar tackles environmental, diversity, and social responsibility issues through various approaches. I’m confident about the future.
