P2F Market is Booming and How 




Airbus, one of the world's largest airplane manufacturers, has firmed up plans for the freighter version of its successful passenger jet A350 with interest from the likes of global cargo giants DHL and UPS. And Boeing, which has a near monopoly in the production freighter market, has a plan for a freighter version of it's yet to be operational passenger jet B777X.

While the Covid-19 pandemic has taken its toll on the aviation sector, cargo operations are offsetting operators’ losses, as it continues to play a critical role in facilitating international trade. As a result, industry forecasts show an increase in demand for wide-body freighter aircraft with long-haul capacity.

As original equipment manufacturers like Airbus and Boeing expand their production freighter options, the conversion of passenger-to-freighter (P2F) business has also boomed ever since the Covid-19 pandemic gripped the world.

In a latest development, Mammoth Freighters, a Florida-based company founded in December 2020, is promising to offer a P2F conversion programme for both Boeing 777-200LR and 777-300ER. Mammoth plans a flexible business model to market which provides dynamic options for global air cargo operators. It offers conversions for customer-owned 777s and ready-to-fly converted freighters from its existing fleet of 10 ex-Delta 777-200LRs.

Volga-Dnepr delegation held a meeting with Airbus’s top management about the launch programme for A350 freighter conversion, as a wide-body cargo aircraft solution, hosted on board Airbus’s A350-1000 on July 22, 2021, during the MAKS 2021 international aviation and space salon held in Russia. There are, however, concerns emerging about the widebody aircraft as Qatar Airways grounded thirteen A350s citing fuselage degradation.  

The delegation, headed by the chairman of the board of directors Aleksey Ivanovich Isaikin met Airbus executive president for the European Region Wouter Van Wesche.

The all-cargo carrier that specialises in large air freight shipments, along with its subsidiaries, never had any Airbus aircraft in its freighter fleet that includes Antonov, Ilyushin and Boeing aircraft. The group’s interest in the new A350 production freighter, along with their curiosity to be the launch customer for the MC-21-300 freighter version, could be a serious attempt to diversify fleets to offer customised solutions to customers around the world.

For example, Volga-Dnepr deployed its first Boeing 777 freighter for commercial service in December 2020 after operating the same kind of airplanes for 15 years.

Konstantin Vekshin, chief commercial officer, Volga-Dnepr Group, in an April 2021 Cargo Masterminds interview with The STAT Trade Times said they are very well prepared for additional airplanes in the near future.

When asked if they will induct more B777 freighters, he said, “We would love to but it is a learning curve for us. It seems to be a great airplane and it is a nice addition to our fleet. It is also friendlier in terms of environmental concerns. At the same time, it is a new chapter for us."

Airbus announced the approval for the production of the A350 freighter derivative in July along with the half-year 2021 results, following many feedbacks from their carrier customers and informed that it will enter into service by 2025.

The A350 technology advancements include a wing design that helps the aircraft to automatically adapt to certain flight phases, which allows for improved aerodynamics and fuel economics. The fuselage of the aircraft is made of carbon fibre, which, together with the technological design of the aircraft, can reduce fuel consumption by 25 percent, according to Volga-Dnepr. 

Qatar Airways, one of the biggest operators of A350s (53 aircraft of -900 and -1000 versions),  issued a release on August 5, 2021 citing “significant condition across its Airbus A350 fleet in which the fuselage surface below the paint is degrading at an accelerated rate.”  The airline has grounded thirteen A350 aircraft and has already taken action to return its A330 fleet into service with immediate effect to offset the impact.

Akbar Al Baker, chief executive of Qatar Airways Group, said, “Qatar Airways expects Airbus to have established the root cause and permanently corrected the underlying condition to the satisfaction of Qatar Airways and our regulator before we take delivery of any further A350 aircraft.”

Meanwhile, the benefits of an A350 freighter would be that it meets ICAO C02 emission standards and will have 20 percent less fuel burn compared to twin-engine freighters, 30 percent less compared to trijets and 40 percent less compared to quadjets, as per the Airbus announcement.  

With 55 aircraft, Singapore Airlines became the largest operator of A350 by inducting three more into its fleet in April 2021. Meanwhile, Airbus delivered the first A350-900 from its widebody completion & delivery centre in Tianjin (C&DC), China, to China Eastern Airlines in July 2021.

Boeing released its first Sustainability Report, in which the company shares its vision for the future of sustainable aerospace, establishes broad sustainability goals and highlights environmental, social and governance (ESG) progress in alignment with global sustainability standards.

"In September 2020, amidst a global pandemic, Boeing formed a sustainability organization dedicated to advancing our ESG efforts across the enterprise. As we continue on this journey, we are pleased to publish our first comprehensive report, focused on stakeholder responsiveness and data transparency," said Boeing chief sustainability officer Chris Raymond. 

"We know there's still work to do and are committed to communicating our progress and holding ourselves accountable to ensure the aerospace industry is safe and sustainable for generations to come."

Boeing's sustainability efforts are organized around four key pillars: people, products and services, operations and communities. In 2020, highlights across these four pillars included:

  • Establishing six broad new sustainability goals in alignment with our key sustainability priorities and stakeholder interests.
  • Defining the company's vision for the future of sustainable aerospace through fleet renewal, network operational efficiency, renewable energy and advanced technology.
  • Committing to deliver commercial airplanes capable of flying on 100% sustainable fuels by 2030.
  • Partnering with Etihad Airways on the 2020 ecoDemonstrator program, which tested sustainable technologies on one of the airline's new 787-10 Dreamliners.
  • Implementing digital engineering tools on the T-7A Red Hawk program, achieving a 75 percent increase in first-time engineering quality and an 80 percent reduction in assembly hours.
  • Advancing flight tests for Cora, an all-electric, self-flying air taxi developed by Boeing and Kitty Hawk joint venture Wisk.
  • Responding to COVID-19 by executing airlift missions to transport supplies, providing community vaccination sites and minimizing air travel health risks through the Confident Travel Initiative.
  • Establishing a 20-member Racial Equity Task Force to represent diverse viewpoints and amplify all voices at Boeing.
  • Setting 2030 environmental performance goals to reduce emissions, waste, water use and energy consumption.
  • Achieving net-zero carbon emissions at work sites, while reducing energy consumption by 12 percent, water use by 23 percent, solid waste by 44 percent and hazardous waste by 34 percent.
  • Attaining the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award for Sustained Excellence every year since 2010.
  • Contributing $234 million in community giving, working with 13,400 community partners and volunteering 250,000 hours.

Boeing, SkyNRG and SkyNRG Americas have partnered to focus on scaling the availability and use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) globally. Boeing will also invest in SkyNRG Americas' SAF production project, with a previously announced partner Alaska Airlines.

“Sustainable aviation fuels are safe, proven and offer the greatest potential to reduce our industry's carbon emissions in the near, medium and long term.This partnership is an important milestone on our journey to decarbonize aerospace, while ensuring that its societal and economic benefits are available to people everywhere,” said Boeing chief sustainability officer Chris Raymond.

Boeing, SkyNRG and SkyNRG Americas will work together to accelerate SAF development globally, focusing on scaling production capacity, building awareness and engaging stakeholders throughout the value chain, including airlines, governments and environmental organizations.
