Mark Sutch's turbulent flight with CMA CGM Air Cargo

It was in late January this year that Mark Sutch announced his decision to leave Cathay Pacific after heading various responsibilities at the Hong Kong-headquartered carrier in different cities for close to 20 years. But it was only a month later, towards the end of February, that he revealed his next job. He was to join CMA CGM Air Cargo, the brand new all-cargo airline of CMA CGM, the French shipping group, as its new chief commercial officer, to be based at the group headquarters in Marseille, the port city in southern France.

Sutch, based in Mumbai, was the regional general manager South Asia, Middle East & Africa for Cathay. Before he left Mumbai in mid-March for a short holiday with his family in London and later to Marseille, where he was to officially join CMA CGM Air Cargo on April 11, I joined him on a private flight from Juhu Aerodrome. Sutch is a trained pilot and holds a private pilot license. But he was flying an Indian registered aircraft for the first time. It was the Diamond DA42, a twin engine, four seat, propeller-driven airplane. He was flying south out of Mumbai and had the extra ordinary challenge of navigating his flight coordinating three radio frequencies.

When I met Sutch at Juhu Aerodrome, he told me again how excited he was to join the CMA CGM Air Cargo. He called it a “start-up cargo airline”. “I am looking forward to the challenges of building an all-cargo airline and the time is just right for having such an experience,” he told me before he took seat on the DA42 to fly over the city of Mumbai.

DHL Express breaks ground for Munich gateway facility

Today, DHL Express Germany marked the official start of construction for its new Munich Airport facility with a groundbreaking ceremony. The building, which is being built on parking lots P 80 and P 80 West, will boast a gross floor area of over 11,000 square meters. This will make the facility almost seven times larger than the warehouse DHL Express currently rents at Munich Airport’s cargo center. DHL Express will build and operate the new site on land leased from the airport operator Flughafen MĂ¼nchen GmbH (FMG).

The new facility comes in response to growing DHL Express shipment volumes at the Munich gateway. Talking about the business’s EUR 104 million investment, Markus Reckling, Managing Director of DHL Express Germany, explains “our old processing area can’t keep pace with the growth in import and export volumes given current digitalization and globalization trends. The new gateway facility at Munich Airport not only represents the next important step in our infrastructure plan but also enables us to prioritize our customers by offering them an improved service.” Once operational, the airside access allows aircraft parked on the apron to be reached directly from the new building. The gateway also has two so-called PUD fingers (pick-up and delivery), at which up to 65 delivery vehicles can be handled simultaneously. For customers in the Landsberg-Ingolstadt region, in particular, this will translate into a faster pick-up and delivery times.

Airbus, major airlines show intent to explore carbon removal solutions

Airbus and a number of major airlines — Air Canada, Air France-KLM, easyJet, International Airlines Group, LATAM Airlines Group, Lufthansa Group and Virgin Atlantic — have signed Letters of Intent (LoI) to explore opportunities for a future supply of carbon removal credits from direct air carbon capture technology.

Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS) is a high-potential technology that involves filtering and removing CO2 emissions directly from the air using high powered fans. Once removed from the air, the CO2 is safely and permanently stored in geologic reservoirs. As the aviation industry cannot capture CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere at source, a direct air carbon capture and storage solution would allow the sector to extract the equivalent amount of emissions from its operations directly from atmospheric air.

Carbon removals via direct air capture technology complement other solutions that deliver CO2 reductions, such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), by addressing remaining emissions that cannot be directly eliminated.

As part of the agreements, the airlines have committed to engage in negotiations on the possible pre-purchase of verified and durable carbon removal credits starting in 2025 through to 2028. The carbon removal credits will be issued by Airbus’ partner 1PointFive — a subsidiary of Occidental’s Low Carbon Ventures business and the global deployment partner of direct air capture company Carbon Engineering. Airbus’ partnership with 1PointFive includes the pre-purchase of 400,000 tonnes of carbon removal credits to be delivered over four years.
